March Break Program
Exploring books from the Parkwood library that Sam McLaughlin acquired for his five daughters & granchildren, this fun programme examines some of the great literary characters introduced during the early decades of the 20th century, many of which are still popular today!
March Break's focus will be on the literature and characters of The Secret Garden , created by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
MORNINGS AT PARKWOOD MARCH 15 - 19
Morning Exploration of the Characters and Themes in the Novel
Join Mary, Martha and Mrs. Medlock as they take you through the story of The Secret Garden , discovering new foods and occupations at the fictious Misselthwaite Manor, creating new friendships and skills along the way.
Monday: The kitchens are a busy place in any manor or estate. This morning we turn to cooking and experience the new tastes Mary discovers upon her arrival at Misselthwaite. Our cooks for the morning will prepare two Secret Garden inspired recipes on the period stove; marmalade and stout bread under the guidance of parlour maid, Martha.
Tuesday: Cleanliness is next to godliness and head housekeeper Mrs. Medlock insists upon an ordely home. The hearths must be raked, the bed linens aired and the laundry completed by the end of this morning. Mrs. Medlock will walk our participants through a morning of chores at Misselthwaite Manor.
Wednesday: Upon her arrival at Misselthwaite, Mary finds comfort in the friendship of a little bird who leads her to the garden. Mary will work with todays participants in thank ing the bird for his friendship by creating a nesting ball and feeding garlands.
Thursday: A new life of handicrafts and privilege await Mary at Misselthwaite, this morning we turn our attentions to the arts and the creation of handicrafts Mary would complete under the guidance of a governess.
Friday: the garden is discovered, cultivated and brought back to its former glory. This morning participants will join Mary, Martha and Mrs. Medlock in creating and planting their own speical items for their garden.
Morning Programs are by registration only. Suitable for children ages 6 through 12. Weekly registration fee is $115.00 per child or if space permits individual morning fees are $30.00 per child per session. Morning sessions run from 9:30 to 11:30 and are a drop off program. (note children must be comfortable to stay without parent).

AFTERNOONS AT PARKWOOD
MARCH 15-19
This March Break try your hand at being a servant at Parkwood. These 1 1/2 hour child only tours of the estate take on a very different look as we get our hands dirty making the beds, beating rugs and scrubbing socks on the scrub board, etc. No autobaron life this week, but an opportunity to explore with your tour guide the service areas of the mansion, including the 3rd floor and basement.
These $10.00 per child specialty tours commence at 1:30; 2:00 and 2:30 each afternoon. A maximum of 10 persons, this tour is available ONLY to those between the ages of 5 and 12. Registration is recommended to ensure you don't miss out and may be made by calling 905-433-4311. These tours are a first come, first serve basis.
MARCH BREAK FOR TWEENS: GARDEN GEMS FOR YOUNG GREENTHUMBS
Young gardeners will learn about the ancient concept of mosaic design and how it inspired the garden beds of Parkwood's Italian Garden. During the workshop, participants will create a unique mosaic planter for their own young plant. Program will run in the Parkwood Potting Shed on Thursday, March 18 from 9:30am to noon.
Registration is $25.00 per person and is required by calling the business office at 905-433-4311.
This program is suitable for Tweens, those 10 to 14 years of age.
