Orchids: Biology, Lore and Mysteries

Orchids are the largest family of flowering plants and there are perhaps as many as 25,000 species. The presentation will combine extraordinary visual images with an interwoven tale of the history and fascination with orchids. Their cultivation and the intrigue that have arisen out of the human desire for things that are exotic, have shaped the place modern orchids have in our lives. After the seminar, you will be filled with a greater appreciation of orchids. Participants will also have an opportunity to view Parkwood’s orchids in the Conservatory Garden, which have intrigued visitors for many years. Come and discover the incredible world of orchids!
Getting Started with Orchids
Thursday, April 1 at 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Selecting the ideal type of orchid is important for success. This seminar will guide you through the main considerations. The seminar concludes by summarizing the aspects of orchid culture in a condensed, but useful manner. Come and discover the amazing world of orchids.
Growing Orchids on Windowsills and Under Lights
Thursday, April 22 at 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Greenhouses are great, but they can be expensive and result in uneven growing conditions. Understanding light sources is important for growing any type of plant. This seminar reviews basic concepts and extends into creating your own plant room. Come and learn ways of featuring your orchids.

Wayne Hingston began his passion for orchids in the 1970s and to this day, he is committed to promoting the orchid’s exquisite qualities through his involvement as Chair of the Show Committee for the Southern Ontario Orchid Society. The society will host its 31st Annual Show on February 13 and 14 at the Toronto Botanical Gardens. Each seminar participant will receive a special discount coupon to enter the upcoming orchid show.
